Fireman Derek’s Story

Firefighter / Baker / Entrepreneur

I started baking Key Lime Pie when I was 15 years old. My love for cooking and baking started when I was a kid. My dad loved to take us to different restaurants around town to try all the different cuisines. When I was in high school I learned to cook for myself and I decided I needed to make dessert. Key Lime Pie was naturally my first choice. Friends and family would tell me how delicious it was. Over the years I taught myself how to make many flavors of pies, cakes, cheesecakes, cookies, brownies, and many other baked goods. I started squeezing limes by hand in my kitchen many years ago and now we have two retail locations and production facility. One retail location is in the artsy Wynwood neighborhood and the other is located in Coconut Grove. The production is currently done in the little Haiti neighborhood. I’ve always loved to feed people, its makes me happy to put a smile on someones face when they eat our desserts. AND yes I was really a Fireman for over a decade professionally!

In July of 2014 we opened Fireman Derek’s Bake Shop in Wynwood. After a couple years we outgrew baking in our Wynwood shop and built our own commercial kitchen in Little Haiti Miami. We can now keep up with our demand and have a thriving retail and wholesale business.

We have a very strong, dedicated and hardworking team. Derek continues to be the mastermind baking in the kitchen and runs our wholesale accounts.

In early 2019 we opened our second retail location in Coconut Grove. This location is a much larger operation as we plan to bring a slice of Wynwood charm to Coconut Grove. We are grateful for our talented team of employees and loyal supporters. We look forward to what the future holds…
